Block just cut 4,000 people during their best quarter in company history. 40% of the staff. Nearly half the company. This isn't a cost-cutting story. This is what happens when AI actually ships inside an organization, not as a pilot, not as a proof of concept, but as infrastructure.

Here's what Block actually did: They built an open source AI agent called Goose, powered by Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, and deployed it across the entire company. Not just engineering. Everyone.

One engineer says 90% of his code is now written by Goose.

Non-technical teams are writing SQL queries, closing support tickets, and managing inventory without waiting for engineers.

Their CTO says it saves employees 8 to 10 hours per week.

Multiply that across thousands of people and the math tells a very clear story.

But here's the part that matters most as an AI Wrangler:

Block didn't wave "AI transformation" as a vague justification. They built the tooling first. Proved the productivity gains. Then made the call.

That's the sequence. Build. Measure. Then restructure around what's working.

Jack's note to the company was worth reading too. Transparent about the why. Kept communication channels open so people could say goodbye properly.

His line that stuck with me: "I'd rather it feel awkward and human than efficient and cold."

This is probably the first major case of a public company explicitly restructuring around AI productivity gains it can actually measure.

Every CEO with an AI roadmap is watching what happens next.
